Delta State Police Pursue Fugitives Following Raid on Alleged Same-Sex Wedding in Warri (READ)
Information reaching us indicates that the Delta State Police Command is searching for Romanus Omozokpea and six others who fled during a police raid on an alleged same-sex wedding in Warri. Meanwhile, 67 individuals were arrested and are set to face trial.
Among those in custody is Jerry Osas, who is reportedly linked to Omozokpea. Sources reveal that both Osas and Omozokpea had previously been accused of same-sex activities in Benin in 2021, though they denied the allegations. Their presence at the Warri event has intensified police investigations.
Same-sex relationships remain illegal in Nigeria under the Same-Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act, which carries a penalty of up to 14 years in prison. While authorities have vowed to prosecute those arrested, human rights organizations have condemned the crackdown, calling it a violation of fundamental rights.
As legal proceedings begin, law enforcement agencies continue their search for the remaining suspects. The case has sparked renewed debates on LGBTQ+ rights in Nigeria, highlighting ongoing tensions between law enforcement policies and human rights advocacy.
